Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay instantly was captivated after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting social activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful by her mother. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights...
